3-Phase ACDB (Alternating Current Distribution Board)

An ACDB for a 3-Phase system is a centralized protection and distribution unit designed for higher-capacity solar power plants or industrial electrical setups. While a 1-phase system handles a single live wire, a 3-Phase ACDB manages three power lines (L1, L2, L3) along with Neutral and Earth, making it essential for balancing loads across a 415V network.

System Overview

In a 3-Phase solar configuration, the ACDB receives the output from a 3-phase string inverter. Its primary role is to safeguard the inverter and the building’s internal grid from electrical faults originating from the utility side or the internal distribution network. It provides a localized point for monitoring and isolating the AC power flow.

Core Components

  • 4-Pole MCB or MCCB: Provides overcurrent and short-circuit protection across all three phases and the neutral line simultaneously.
  • 3-Phase Surge Protection Device (SPD): Protects the sensitive electronics of the inverter from transient overvoltages and lightning strikes across all phases.
  • Energy Meters: Often integrated to monitor voltage, current, and total energy generation (kWh) for each phase.
  • Busbars: High-conductivity copper or aluminum strips used to distribute heavy current loads efficiently within the board.

Operational Importance

The 3-Phase ACDB is vital for Phase Balancing. If one phase experiences a surge or a drop, the protection components ensure that the imbalance does not damage the 3-phase motors or machinery connected to the system. It also allows for safe maintenance by providing a single point of isolation that completely disconnects the inverter from the grid.
